Summary of Interview 080403A with Sognomtseren by Erdenetuya
Before the establishment of the collectives, the 5 year plan was implemented and it was hard for families to fulfil the meat, milk and hay obligations. The collectives were first established in 1954 and herders joined and contributed livestock voluntarily. They started to set clear norms in 1958-1959, joining and since 70s the collectives became state farms (sangiin aj ahui).
Cows were artificially inseminated and there was a100% birth rate; they used to plant vegetables and distribute them to the herders.
At that time, the whole society was based on honesty, and accountability, but today there is increased corruption and favoritism.
Sodnomtseren feels that the collective was a very nice organization and all tasks were achieved by joint efforts.
There were no instructions on how to cook vegetables, so people did not know how to use them and just kept them. Then they froze and had to be thrown away. At that time vegetables and cereals were planted (in Mongolia) and all consumption was provided for domestically ourselves, but now we import cereals and vegetables from abroad. Families were allowed to own no more than 20 livestock and if it was more than 20, they had to give them to the collective.
During the collective period everybody except for the terminally ill had a job and worked hard.
