Summary of Interview 081203A with Sünjidmaa by Erdenetuya
Sunjidmaa was born at Altanbulag sum of Selenge Aimag in 1951 and adopted into the herder Danzan’s family. She entered into the Sühbaatar sum primary school when she was 8.
Her father was a member of the collective throughout his life and she graduated 2-3rd grade at the Dulaanhan sum primary school because her family had moved to this sum.
She graduated 10th grade in the Aimag center and lived at the dormitory. She was a head of the women’s union of the dormitory.
She did not know exactly when TVs and refrigerators were introduced in rural area, but households had a TV after she became a teacher. At that time there were only Russian programmes on TV because there was no access to local programmes in the countryside.
At that time, students used dry ink, a dip pen to put into the ink, and Russian notepad with 12 pages and they were scarce. Also, there was a brown uniform and girls had two slips, one was black and used every day and another one was a white and used during holidays and official events.
Herders preferred to send their children to schools and learned scripts themselves during the cultural campaign.
There was no books and text books at that time, although teachers worked very hard to teach children. She became a teacher of history and geography at the Dulaanhan school, but she taught many different subjects due to a lack of teachers at that time.
At that time, many different activities were organized by the Pioneer organization among children and the best students were awarded by the Natsagdorj medal, certificate of best friend of the book, student with excellent mark-medal etc.
During the summer vocation, children were given homework to submit 10 ground-squirrel skins, make notes reading books, learn new songs and poems and there were a lot of advocacy sessions on party, education and culture at the school.
At the education sector, many different initiatives to improve the quality of teaching were undertaken. In 1975, it was announced as the year of children and many activities were organized for children.
