Summary of Interview 090735A with Zorigt by Khishigsüren

He is the Mayor of Hishig Öndör sum of Bulgan aimag.

M. Zorigt was born in 1967 in Hishig Öndör sum. He spent his childhood here. He is qualified as an economist and state manager. He has talked extensively about the history of the development of Hishig Öndör sum beginning from its establishment to the present day. He talked in detail about the inheritance of Mongolian history – the great Buddha Red Guardian Ochirvaani (the great god of independence), the monasteries, the lamas and the Chinese revolutionary soldiers. There were big shops run by Chinese in the monasteries of Baruun Gün, Erdene Hamba, Lamyn ovoo and Hishig Öndör and how their gold and silver were confiscated. He also emphasized there was a Mongolian number one tobacco-pipe (22 cm in length).

He talked a little about his granddad’s brother Gandan gavj who was repressed. Hishig Öndör sum is considered to have been established in 1931, when the administrative structure was changed. By collectivization in 1959, Hishig Öndör had a much higher number of collectivized livestock compared to the number nationwide. At the peak of the socialist period it had a quite large collective carpentry factory with sawmills. It also had the first large deer enterprise in Mongolia which was established in 1976. It had two hashaa with over 1000 deer inside. In 1990 at the advent of democracy, when he was the general accountant of Hishig Öndör sum, people from New Zealand used to come and buy the velvet antlers with dollars. At that time it was a large enterprise selling 350-400 kg of antlers for 17,000-25,000 American dollars and he regretted that in the later days it was done away with.

There is much party polarization over democracy, social decay and the multi-party system in the local state administrative organizations and other official organizations. He said he was working for eliminating all this. He considers the 1990 social collapse up was right, since it shifted the socialist economy to the market economy. But he is upset by the wrong execution of privatization, without any preparation and knowledge.

Summary of Interview 090735B with Zorigt by Khishigsüren

The second part of his interview was given while we went to the center of Hishig-Öndör sum. He extensively talked about the collective factories, the deer enterprise, the hospital, and the building of the cultural center that were built during the socialist period and that had operated effectively. He also mentioned them in his first interview.

One fact of interest is that the cultural center building was built at certain time by the Chinese and it was built without using any nails. If one fastener dislocates, the building might shatter. Such building has such a delicate architecture and they don’t know where the fastener is. The builders have kept the secret, he said.

From the story he has told we can see a detailed explanation of the history of the local sum, its development, the achievements of the state and budget organizations and the future activities. He believes in doing great things for the sake of his nation. He is a patriot with a desire to preserve the history and culture and restore it. He is a representative of the intelligentsia with a heart to cherish and protect the natural world.
