Summary of Interview 090822A with Avirmed by Erdenetuya

Avirmed guai was born in 1932 in Bayantsogt sum of Töv aimag. She was raised by her parents. In 1951 she attended the obstetrician training course and became a nurse at maternity hospital No.1.

The children of that time were very disciplined and they respected the elders and they feared them. The children used to play riding horses and setting up gers with stones, they also played with ankle bones and throwing a piece of wood in the twilight. She has studied until the fourth grade and then quit school. But later she completed the seventh grade.

Child adoption was very common then and it wasn’t due to poor life, but the compassion for the childless people let them give away their children as it is said “one is not confined by a person’’.

In the 1950s there were no other buildings in Ulaanbaatar besides the Janraisag (temple in Gandan) and the ‘Tall store’. There used to be ‘ails’ with wooden fences.

During the cultural campaign Avirmed guai used to visit the ‘ails’ with a hygiene inspection. She gave high requirements to the dirty ‘ails’, and sometimes she illustrated herself how to wash and clean.

It wasn’t so tough to get employed at that time. There was no problem if there were vacancies, but mostly the people got appointments to work and they were employed straight away.

She doesn’t care about democracy at all. Sometimes it seems needful things appear, but at present time everything seems to be incomprehensible.

The families didn’t divorce and the men and the women had equal rights. The state provided the children’s allowance with the intention to increase the population, said Avirmed guai.
