Summary of Interview 101101A with Sühbaatar by Otgonbayar

Sühbaatar guai worked as a brigade darga and a bookkeeper and then he retired. The 26th Congress of the MPRP met on the day we did an interview with Sühbaatar guai.

There were religious relics at home so he took them to Gandan in 1978 for they couldn’t worship them seriously. In 1969 when Sühbaatar guai was the head of the believers’ union, he requested that Gandan give the five idols of the Ööld so he could take them to their homeland but he was refused. At that time the union existed secretly. Today the head of the union is Hürelbaatar.

In the socialist period religion was prohibited but milk and dairy products were still offered to the ovoos. On the northern side of the river Ih there is the foundation of one large monastery, and there in the later days 8 lamas of Zuutiin Donrih and Ööld have held ceremonies together.

After democracy religion became free and recently the number of the shamans had increased. Around one ‘bag’ of Kazakhs lives in Erdenebüren sum and recently they are being Mongolized. There’s one strict thing in Ööld’s custom and that is they do not let the foreigners go to their ovoos but the Halh may go there. Those ovoos were like platforms in the socialist period. In 1990 two lamas were given from Ulaanbaatar and a ovoo was deified. In fact, many people come from Ulaanbaatar to restore and deify the ovoos. In 1955 in his homeland the ovoos were burnt by Nadmid, Bögshir and other children. Today there’s no monastery in Erdenebüren sum. The ‘ails’ go to the aimag to perform the Tsagaan Sar corrective ceremony.

Sühbaatar guai talked about the funeral ceremony. The Öölds always buried the dead in an open place in the olden times and they buried the dead with 13 god-like stupas. They also buried them wrapped in felt and a khadag. Before 1990 once or twice the dead have been encradled.

The Öölds live in Hashaat and Ölziit of Arhangai. They also live in Sharga of Gobi-Altai. They were dispersed in the period of Galdanboshigt.

In 1953 the Jants Tree ovoo was worshipped because of goat mange. Since the establishment of the collectives it hasn’t been worshipped. Recently the so-called 'Wish Ovoo' has arisen and rumors have spread that if you give money, your wishes come true. There’s such a tree in the land of Sühbaatar guai.

Sühbaatar has said that during the repression in 1932 lamas were arrested in the biggest monastery of the Öölds.

Sühbaatar guai has told us in this interview about the arrest and repression of the lamas who resided in the Ööld’s yellow monastery. Only 7-8 of the arrested lamas returned. When Sühbaatar guai was the head of the believers’ union, it was said that repression issue of 33 people had been resolved in their sum.

Owing to democracy he has acquired certain amount of livestock. He has been a MPRP member and even a darga. But now everything has changed. In 1990 the Social Democratic Party darga Lhagvajav wanted Sühbaatar guai to join his party but he refused and he went away slamming the door. Today he become a good lama, a wrestler and has livestock and a horse.

There’s no operating monastery in his sum nowadays, but he has built one stupa.
