Summary of Interview 081208B with Nyamaa


With the rise of democracy Nyamaa became unemployed and he started growing grain and vegetables privately. He sold the grain to the flour plant and the vegetables to the people. But at that time the country had an economic crisis and the citizens had no cash therefore he exchanged the vegetables for sheep and goats. He said, “By 1990 the people who were able to manage something, managed some kind of business and the life of those who weren’t able to do something became tough.” In 1998 they had quite a lot of livestock and they wanted to further increase the number but beginning from that year, for three years running there had been zud and the majority of the livestock were lost. Further, some of his children went to the city to serve in the military and some had to study therefore they came and settled in Ulaanbaatar and the livestock they had left were tended by their relatives who lived near the city.


He said, “The present day people’s work attitude has changed greatly compared to the people of the socialist period. At that time people did the work diligently and the present day young people are quite different and they have an aloof attitude. The cadres’ policy has been lost. “
