Summary of Interview 100806A with Ochirhüü


Ochirhüü guai was born in 1926 in Tonhil sum of Gobi-Altai aimag. He tended livestock till he reached 20 and then he went to serve in the military.


When there was the Tonhil monastery, there used to be about 1500 lamas and during the repressions they were forced to marry and become secular. The repressed were arrested at night therefore the people were unaware of this.


The people’s life has improved with the establishing of the collectives and the ‘ails’ retained 75 head of livestock for their private use and the rest they collectivized. The collectives had very strict and firm principles, and a lot of Party propaganda and meetings were organized.


The cultural campaign enlightened the people and delivered them from ailments and made them look after their hygiene.


It was the period of high commitment to work and diligence, the law was respected and the people were greatly respected. The children were very disciplined and arhi was rare therefore it was peaceful.


Nature, politics and everything is being changed and Ochirhüü guai is very bothered that false lamas who don’t know anything are increasing in number.


As a result of democracy the politicians ceased considering about the people and they have in mind only to share some tögrögs between each other. Through privatization only a few people with acquaintances took advantage of the property. It is regretable that a few well-off people gain by the outcome of democracy and the ordinary people are being victimized.


At that time the dead were put out in the open at the places where it was customary to put them. Nowadays they are cremated and it has both bad and good sides and perhaps the bad side prevails. Finally Ochirhüü taught the next generation to cherish nature and the tradition of the nation and keep the laws and have a proper education.
