Summary of Interview 080809A with Tsohio
Tsohio was born to a family of an ordinary herder. He had six siblings. Some of his siblings were given to adoption. In 1942, at 11 he went to elementary school. From 1951 to 1954 he served in the army. After the army, he worked in many places in Ömnögobi. His job history includes work as the darga of a collective farm, an aid to the darga of Ömnögobi aimag’s Planning Commission, the darga of a brigade, an aid to the darga of Party’s cell, the darga of Party’s cell, and the darga of People’s Inspection Committee. For his work he received many awards from the state. After retirement in 1991, he spent about ten years herding.
Tsohio tells about his elementary school, the army, his siblings, his jobs, collectivisation, and when he first saw a car. In his days, younger conscripts were not subjected to humiliating treatment in the army. It was institutionalized only later. Every soldier had a ration of 300g of tobacco, whether one smoked or not. He became member of the People’s Revolutionary Party in 1956. Not everyone was accepted to the Party, including those from a noble lineage or those whose parents were lamas. Being member of the Party, Tsohio was appointed to different jobs that he did by the Party. As a cell’s darga, his job entailed improving the education of its members, and organising activities, such as digging up wells, building fences for cattle. Members had to pay membership fee. While working in the People’s Inspection Committee, he had the opportunity to go to the USSR on a short educational trip.
He keeps in touch with his siblings who were given to adoption. He personally participated in the collectivisation.
