Summary of Interview 081210A with Oidov
Oidov Begzjav was born in Tsagaan Tolgoi (White Hill) in Taishir sum, Gobi-Altai aimag in 1945 as the second child of Begzjav, the herder. He completed secondary school in 1965, and he started working for the Water Managing Company in Gobi-Altai aimag, until he gradually became a master driller. Then he was promoted to brigade director and worked there until 1973. Oidov joined the Mongolian Revolutionary Party as a member because of his excellent performance; eventually he was awarded The Aimag Labor Champion. Working over 8 years in the countryside, he submitted a request to study in University to the aimag Party Committee and he was admitted to the auto-engineering class at the Politechnical University. Graduating the university, he worked for the auto-station of Ministry of Education in Ulaanbaatar, and then shifted to the 29th auto-station. After the Democratic Revolution in 1990, he worked in Hailaast Gold Mining for 10 years, and then retired. “People used to do the jobs honestly during socialism. It was the time when who worked gets something, goes to foreign countries, and meets people” he recalled.
What he says about how he collided with “snake gathering” when he was working at Gobi Altai Water Management Company is special and interesting. The Mongols are careful and respectful to the snake as the “animal of the water god” and it is said “if one sits down and covers the earth with the skirt of his/her deel instead of becoming scared and running away when one meets a gathering of snakes, the chief of the gathering gives a tiny treasure to him/her and the gain or profit flows for him/her”. As Oidov said his work was very successful the same year when he met the snake gathering, then he became “Aimag Labor Champion”.
