Summary of Interview 081224A with Anonymous

U. Zagiraa was born in 1972 in Böhmörön soum of Uvs aimag. She is the only daughter of a herder’s family that has three sons. When she was small, she was spoiled. Her father was a blacksmith and he had his daughter assist him in smith’s occasional work (grinding, polishing, straightening). She was far from the needle-and-thread work which girls were usually taught. In fact, she was raised like a tomboy perhaps because she lived with boys.

In 1980 she went to school just like all the other herders’ children and she lived in a dormitory. She recalled in detail her childhood and school years. The everyday life of the dormitory children, what kind of art and artistic work the children of that time were involved in, how they spent their free time, how the teachers of that time worked with the children, and about going hunting with her dad though she was a girl. The schoolchildren of that time were given summer assignments to bring squirrel’s skin, and in order to fulfill it they learned to hunt squirrels with a trap and a snare. She has also shared funny stories about what happened during her childhood.

It was the toughest and the hardest time in her life when her father passed away. She talked a little about the funeral rituals of that time. After having finished the eighth grade, she studied in the construction vocational school in Bayan-Ölgii and then she worked for some time.

She met her husband and they have four sons. She told about her life.
