The interviewee is Buryat by ethnicity. He is married and has a child. He was born in Ulaanbaatar in 1961, but spent his childhood and school years in Dornod aimag centre where his father worked as a train driver. There he finished secondary school in 1979 and went to the Kazakh ASSR to study in a technical college, from which he graduated in 1980. On his return to Mongolia, he worked as a tractor driver in ‘Sumber’ state farm. From 1982 to 1985 he served in the army. In 1987, he entered what is known today as the Scientific Technical University, but did not finish it.


He tells about his childhood, his parents, the army life, education in socialist Mongolia, the repression, and democracy. In the socialist period, he recalls, elementary school pupils were referred to as ‘heroes’, whereas those from secondary school level were ‘pioneers’. Male ‘heroes’ had to have their heads shaved, but ‘pioneers’ were allowed to grow short hair. The interviewee has been to prison twice. The first time, in 1980, he was found guilty of beating up a man. In 2003, he was involved in a drunken row where a person was stabbed, but he could not prove his innocence. He was sentenced to three years, but served two. Having dropped out of university, in 1990 he engaged in petty trade and traveled to China and Russia. He supports democracy, because it brought freedom to the people.


In his interview, he also discusses Buryat culture. He says that he has relatives in Buryatia.
