Summary of Interview 090748A with Mashdelger

Mashdelger guai first went to school in 1953, and the teachers of that time taught very skillfully and they were good at their vocation. He was born in 1944 and, after having finished the seventh grade, he was appointed to the construction vocational school. He has been working with the fire brigade and then he was appointed as a department darga. He has worked for many years at a leading position and he said it wasn’t an easy job to supervise people.

In 1968 there was a children’s colony where children mostly connected with livestock theft were disciplined. The people released from there were employed at various works thus making them actively involved in social life and leading them in the right direction. Through the cultural campaign activity, the inspection of the personal hygiene and the environment was organized, and even the art and culture performances were examined. As a result, there was a marked change in all the spheres of social life. The people started being on time. If they were late one minute, their pictures would be hung on the board.

Mashdelger guai withdrew from livestock herding beginning from the fourth grade and when he was small, he used to graze his young goats. At noon he came home to have yogurt, he recalled. It was prohibited to celebrate Tsagaan sar when Choibalsan guai passed away, and it was prohibited for a period of time.

With the coming of democracy a hunger strike was announced on the square, and 22 people had a sit-down strike. In the socialist period some ideologies were not allowed and even the books and writings were censored. But today everything has become free. It is regretful that democracy is being used incorrectly.

Privatization was first initiated by a man named Ganbold and only the highly-placed people comprehended it correctly and could get something out of it, but for the lower-ranking people everything went wrong. Mashdelger guai reminded us that democracy should be developed in the right way and the people should be well aware of their own genealogy and they should protect it.
