Summary of Interview 090757B with Jalbaa
Jalbaa guai was very engaged in hunting and he told us about it.
He heard about the democratic events only on the radio and the hunger strike was announced on March 8th, which the countryside people didn't like, for it was Women’s Day. With the coming of democracy the herders acquired their own livestock but due to lack of constant income they exchanged their livestock for flour, rice and other things and in fact they have descended into poverty.
During the socialist period there was nothing to worry about and if you had work, your future was guaranteed. But nowadays we have a constant worry about today and tomorrow for our children. An image has become common in Mongolia of men consuming alcohol and quitting their work whereas the women strive to manage their life. For some time the people have migrated en masse to Ulaanbaatar but now the migration has decreased. There has been a great migration to the west, following the gold mines.
In the olden times, people often adopted children in Jalbaa guai’s homeland and child mortality was high.
A peaceful heart is much greater happiness than having rich possessions but the Mongolians as a whole live in stress.
