Summary of Interview 100801A with Tsermaa

Tsermaa guai was born in 1952 in Gobi-Altai aimag. She graduated from the Polytechnic and Party Institute. The large families grew grain and they milled the flour and consumed it. Relations between the family, parents and the children were warmer and closer than nowadays, she recalled.

The sum citizens were made to rise early in the morning and do exercises. Also, there were many venereal diseases therefore the families were inspected. When the schoolchildren lived in the school dormitory, the parents had to provide the school with the firewood. The dormitory children couldn’t eat vegetables, so it was tough. The school director’s name was Manal.

In the 1990s she found a girl abandoned at the door of her parent-in-law and she took her and raised her.

In 1970 when she was employed to work at the flour plant, it operated manually. The workers strictly followed the labor protection regulations and they were regularly sent to attend qualification enhancement courses.

When joining the party, initially you joined as a deputy member.

Items such as felt and playing cards were given to the herders as work incentives. At the plant, the workers were given incentives in the form of salary. The women’s organization organized a ‘conference of women experts on young animals and milkmaids’ in the sums, and a ‘conference on household culture’ in the aimag. The party elementary-level organizations managed the work of promoting women. Tsermaa guai thinks that the present day party elementary-level organizations have become rigid.

Tsermaa guai’s father was repressed in connection with the ‘Ahai Yonzon Hamba case’. Tsermaa guai said she was happy that thanks to democracy the land and the livestock were given to the people. But she concluded that in the socialist period there were few jobless people but now it is just the opposite. The privatization was carried out unfairly and mostly the intellectuals couldn’t get a share.
